The Aspects Debate: Imagine Ireland/Beyond Borders: Writing & Politics Today

This year featuring Henry McDonald, Mary Kenny, Fionola Meredith, and Carlo Gebler, the annual Aspects debate is the event that best demonstrates the ethos of the Festival.

The island of Ireland is an island of two countries, but it is an island which now has a permeable border, an invisible border even. Northern Ireland has arrived at a postconflict state and cross-border movement and co-operation is more and more common.

How do writers negotiate this new relationship between two countries on one island?
How do their stories and poems engage publicly to a island's changing political and economic plight? Can a writer's words transcend borders and cultures?

The Aspects Debate will be chaired by the experienced Observer journalist Henry McDonald. Between them, the panellists have written dozens of books, plays and articles which investigate many of the issues concerning society today. Their insights and expertise will contribute to what we believe will be a timely and lively debate. Audience members will of course be encouraged to challenge our panel with questions to create even more debate.

Henry McDonald is the Observer's Belfast correspondent.

Fionola Meredith is a freelance writer and broadcaster living in Belfast.

Carlo Gebler is a well-known writer with many books to his name. His latest novel is The Dead Eight (New Island, 2011).

Mary Kenny is a well-known Irish author, broadcaster, playwright and journalist.
