Spark Opera Belfast
Usual Ticket Price: £10
Spark Opera and the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival present the world premiere of Conor Mitchell's "Requiem for the Disappeared". This special performance featuring the internationally renowned soprano Rebecca Caine and 26 piece orchestra will fill Belfast Cathedral for one night only. If you are new to this kind of music, this is the perfect event to Test Drive.
The music (a setting of the Latin Mass for the dead) is composer Mitchell's personal response to the disappeared of the Northern Irish Troubles: the missing and the found. This unique and poignant event - the first of its kind - looks set to resonate across Northern Ireland.
Armagh based Mitchell began work on the requiem after hearing the - often untold - stories associated with the disappearance of many men and women during the Troubles. Some of their bodies have been found. Others have not. Mitchell says his new work is a "musical reflection on the issue of the right to burial. It doesn't answer any questions, but it does ask some."
Inspired by the families of the disappeared, the Requiem itself is dedicated to Jean McConville.
Rebecca Caine - a regular in Belfast - has performed all around the globe with companies such as Opera North and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. She is best known for originating the role of Cosette in Les Miserables. As well as orchestra, she will be supported by Spark Choir and the trumpeters of the South Ulster Community Band.
This event will take place in St. Anne's Cathedral, Belfast.
